I wear a ring on my thumb that says "Freedom" on one side and "True Bliss" on the other side. I purchased this ring following my divorce as part of the process of determining where I should go from there. While I wear the ring every day (or almost), I realized recently that I'd started to let the meaning behind it drift; in at least some areas of my life, I was no longer searching for the things that truly give me bliss and I was feeling trapped instead of free. Even in the things that make me happiest, I was losing the joy and instead seeing the stress and frustration and negativity. WellAfter the closing session at Lotusphere, where Benjamin Zander gave his inspiring talk on radiating possibility, one thing is clear. That.Won't.Do. So I'm rededicating myself to finding bliss and possibility in the moment and feeling the freedom to make healthy, joy-inspiring choices. For all the mistakes and bad choices I've made up to this point: How Fascinating! :-) Let's see what I can learn today.

So, I've been lurking and hiding for the last month or so - it was a month full of moves, illness, and other crap... I'm finally over most of it (one or two more moves in the next weeks) and starting the serious packing and final prepping for Lotusphere. (Take my advice - don't even ask about Wedding planning. The wedding is still on, I'm still happy about it, and it's in 2 months, but there's nothing planned, so I don't really want to discuss it.) I've just posted about some of my Lotusphere activities at the WorkFlow Studios' site, but there are two special sessions that I want to highlight this year. First, the brand-new Lotus Positions for Lotus Geeks yoga class that I'll be doing each morning out by the Dolphin pool. I wrote at length about this new class for the LotusUserGroup.org newsletter this week. Here are some highlights from the article - please join me each morning by the Dolphin pool at 7 am!
If you're anything like me, you usually run around Lotusphere tired and in pain most of the week, after overdoing it on the first day or two. You then stumble through the week and go home sick and ready to collapse. You may make resolutions before the show, saying you won't stay out too late, won't drink too much, and absolutely will NOT get sick this year. Ummhmm. I've been there. This year, I have a new solution, and one that will let you take home new skills to put to use immediately (that's the holy grail of session promises, right?). For the first time, we're offering Lotus Positions for Lotus Geeks: geek-friendly yoga down by the Dolphin poolside, every morning from 7:00 am to 7:50 am. {...} The idea may be a little bit outside of the norm, but let me make a few points. First, I know from reading your blogs and listening to your tweets that many of you are doing "get in shape" types of things, such as those of you who will be showing off your push-up prowess at the show. Yoga fits right in to this - an opportunity to connect with the community while keeping up your commitment to fitness - no easy task at a conference. Second, while you may think that you need special clothes, special equipment, or to already be fit or flexible, I'm here to tell you that it just isn't so. Come dressed however you like (although those in skirts and heels will have to do a modified version of some of the activities). It would make the most sense to come in something a little bit loose and comfortable, but jeans and a t-shirt will do fine. As for equipment - if you were to bring a towel or an extra t-shirt as props, it would make some things easy and fun, but the truth is that if we're going to do yoga that you can do wearing whatever you like, we're not going to be using a lot of props. That said, if you have a yoga mat (because you already do yoga) and would like to bring it, you may feel more at home. And for those of you worried that yoga requires you to be fit or flexible already...see the previous comments that you can do these poses wearing your normal clothes if you like. So, how contortionist do you really think we can get? That's not to say I couldn't do some headstands or splits or various other pretzel poses... but those aren't really what our geek bodies need to start out with. {...} When I leave a yoga class, I feel tall, graceful, and happy. Since I'm neither of the first two, physically speaking, there must be something about the class itself that engenders this feeling. So I challenge all of you to take at least one morning off from the BoFs to join me at the Dolphin pool and learn a new skill that will make you feel great. The other cool new events I get to be involved with are the Nerd Girls: Making Geek Chic roundtable and BoF sessions. Both Mary Beth Raven and Gab Davis have blogged about their involvement, and a group of us did a podcast with Chris Miller of IDoNotes fame. At this session, the panelists will tell their stories, answer some questions, and generally talk about why Nerd Girls are so valuable to the community and how Nerd Girls can get where they want to go in technology. I can't wait to learn from some of these incredibly successful technologists. I'm off to finish prepping for my sessions, packing, steaming myself to get my head cleared, and other assorted activities. See you in Orlando!

I haven't done this in a while... I'm in the process of writing a Lotusphere session! My colleague Tom and I were accepted to speak in the best practices track at Lotusphere 2009. We're working quite madly on our slides for this week's deadline on the following session: Health Check: How's Your IBM Lotus Domino Environment? Whether there's concern about poor Lotus Notes performance, you inherit an environment, or you're a new administrator wanting confidence in your choices, this session is for you. A health check that follows an organized method for auditing the servers, including the Lotus Domino Directory, server configuration, and security, can lead to consolidations, upgrades, and improvements to performance, security, and manageability of your environment. Want Lotus Notes to be loved and you cast as the hero(ine)? Take home a checklist to guide your own audits, best practice settings, and configurations to compare with what you find. We'll help you prioritize issues based on urgency and complexity to keep Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino running smoothly and serving the business. If any of you have questions, thoughts, comments, or suggestions leading into this session, I'd love to hear them. What do you look for during a health check? What do you find is the most overlooked issue? Let us know and we'll include it! It's possible that there will be a few other fun things that I'll be participating in during the show, but I'm not quite ready to announce those yet. Still I'm excited to be back to the show this year!

I know, I know, you're never supposed to apologize for a blog absence. I won't. I'll just say that I've missed writing here, and hearing from you, although Twitter has helped me through. i've got a lot of making up to do - cleaning up the site, updating it a bit, and being more regular about my content production again. Thanks to many of you who checked in on me during Hurricane Ike. (And to Rocky, who also posted to let you know I was ok...) The hurricane itself didn't damage my house or hurt me. In fact, once the power went off, I slept through most of the worst of the wind and rain. When I got up the next morning, the streets were flooded and the wind was still pushing the trees over, but it felt like the storm was winding down. What has been scary and sobering, on the other hand, has been the aftermath. People tend to pay attention to the destructive force and the moment when the storm is hitting, worried about friends and family who might be hurt while nature does its worst. What has hurt Houston, and those of us who live here, even more, however, is the strange half-city we're living in now. When I drive to the post office or the grocery store, it takes more than twice as long as normal, because most of the street lights still have no power or are no longer standing. Of course, there's always the chance that I won't actually be able to conduct whatever business I had in mind, as many stores and restaurants are still without power and are closed. Gas stations are mostly open, but gas is more expensive and at least two stations near me were mostly destroyed by the wind. They won't be open for a while. Grocery stores are scary places - busy (still with people buying ice and other non-perishables), but not quite normal. Driving down the streets in most neighborhoods shows stop and street signs down, street and stop lights dangling from their wires, and a hedge of browning branching and leaves all along the sidewalks where people have piled them in preparation for the debris haulers. Houses and offices still have boarded up windows. Trees are uprooted. Rooftoops are covered with the blue plastic the city distributed to those who lost roofs or had roof damage. The world goes on, but this city is still limping as kids start to go back to school and folks start back to work. I spent last week in Dallas, because my power was out until Friday. I have both power and internet back now, but I'm still one of the lucky ones. Many of my friends are still without. Many of you have been willing to donate in the past - the Red Cross is still operating shelters all over south Texas and can still use donations to help those folks who were not as lucky as I've been. In any case, I've been working hard. Most of you know that I came back to the Lotus biz - I've been to ILUG and CU, as well as a few one-day local conferences, with my new company WorkFlow Studios. I'm going to be working on their marketing and communications, as well as some training, strategy, and consulting when appropriate. I can't promise never to leave again, but it's nice to be back. One of my current big jobs is working on Lotusphere session abstracts for my colleagues, so I've been writing those for the past week or so. I've read Rocky and Ed's advice and am excited to once again be part of it all. Hope Mac remembers his old editor when selecting sessions (wink). Of course, I've got some beliefs of my own on what makes a good abstract - good writing, concrete descriptions of what the attendees get from the session, limited jargon... I've got some Firefox tabs to close, but that will hav to wait. I got a little carried away with my comments about Ike and now I need to get a quick bite to eat before moving on to another set of abstracts and some other meetings.

Well my dear friends and family, I'm wishing you the best and brightest in 2008. I've spent most of the first week of my holiday vacation regrouping and recuperating, not from being sick exactly, but from being worn out and a bit blue. This week, though, is all about working on my master's thesis, planning the year to come, and visiting with friends. There's a small possibility that I may come to the first weekend of Lotusphere this year. I can't take any days off, so I wouldn't be there for the week (and there's nobody to pay my fees to get in), but some good friends have offered a couch/floor/bed space in their room for a night or two, so I may show my face with a handful of CVs and many hugs for my friends in the crowd. We'll see if I can afford the flight (yay for Continental miles) and make it work out.

One of the many ways I merged my two career callings was to write technology-related haiku in all my copious free time way back when. My good friend Rocky Oliver has, a few times, started haiku threads on his blog - sometimes just for kicks and sometimes in an effort to cheer me up as he long ago asked me to cheer him by sending some haiku (long before we had blogs...). In the last few days before Lotusphere, Rocky's at it again with a Lotusphere-related haiku contest... and he's calling the awards "The Libby." Rocky, I'm truly touched! I'm knee deep in finishing a paper for grad school and finishing an application for a loan for the possible new house tonight, but I'll try to put up a few haiku as the week goes on, just to keep my hand in! For now, I leave you with... Everything changes But our friends are the constant Like trees in the wind Yearly conference Work? Renewal of strength and Imagination.

As I dash off to school to continue working on lesson plans, grading, and a few bits for the house I'm trying to purchase, I stopped for a minute to review the blogs in my RSS feed reader. And I have to admit to getting more than a little bit misty and sad. It's Lotusphere time, of course, and for the first time since... well, 95 or 96, I won't be there. I'll be here. Working in a different industry. Missing the action, the people, the knowledge, the atmosphere. Missing hosting parties, writing about the technology and business. Missing it all. Some days, I ask myself whether I regret my choices - to be here, instead of there. And some days, the answer is yes. Not that I don't feel as though I'm doing something important - for me and for my community - I do. I am. But it's hard. My current consolation is that I'm getting some visitors after the show! Yay! I can't wait to see Warren and Kitty!! I hope it's a great Lotusphere. Know that I'll be looking on through the blogs when I can (blocked at school) and thinking of all the great times and people from my Lotusphere days.

Ferris has a few things to say about the
Lotusphere attendance numbers -- they don't quite believe the 6700 number
that I'd heard bandied about, but despite a bit of a "debunking"
flavor, the upshot is that:
| Overall sense: The numbers
were up perhaps 10% over last year. Lotusphere attendence has held solid
over the last several years, although it is down from pre-9/11 headcounts
of 10,000 for 2000 and 2001. Obvious conclusion: The customer base is solid
and continuing to invest in Notes/Domino. |

Oy. and Vey.
Came down with a bit of the crud yesterday
during lunch, but I'm persevering. Had a great time with the blogging panel
yesterday -- we had great panelists (check out Ed's
review or Paul's
pic) and a very interactive, interesting
audience. Also yesterday had the blogging BOF, and a focus group dinner
for the LotusUserGroup.org -- thanks to those who attended our dinner and
gave us their unvarnished and very well expressed/considered opinions about
our site and what we're offering. Stopped by the Engineering party for
a few -- but was just too snuffy and went back to the hotel. Of course,
couldn't quite finish for the evening without stopping by to listen to
the Jamfest -- 'course, I did it from a balcony on the Dolphin, and it
was plenty loud there. I loved the JamFest -- great performers, great idea
-- I couldn't breathe in there it was so loud. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Quite enjoyable from across the water, though.
I've been a bit...tired with the industry
-- not done, but tired... but, the panel, the people, the sessions
at this Lotusphere are really helping to reinvigorate me. Actually, to
tell the truth, I had a technical conversation with Paul
and Warren
and Kitty last night about Admin/Security
topics and actually really wished I were still doing some technical things.
Might have to do some ND7+ research and write a few new sessions for next
few seminars...
Looking forward today to... finding some
DayQuil, presenting "How to 'sell' Notes/Domino inside your organization"
with Ed
at 1:30 in Dolphin S. Hemi III, doing some podcasts this afternoon, and
more.....

I'm having a great Lotusphere -- better
than I expected to, maybe. One of the things I've always loved about the
show is how many friends I have here -- it's even more true as time goes
on and even when you meet new people, often you find that you've known
them online or you make a lucky acquaintance and you just click. I'm reminded
of the song we used to sing in Girl Scouts -- "Make new friends but
keep the old, one is silver, the other gold." This is a good place
for making new friends and catching up with the old (er, perhaps "old"
isn't quite the word I want here?).
Of course, there is one big difference
in my Lotusphere this year -- it's the first year in *many* that I'm not
registered as press. I feel like I've been kicked out of a particular club
that I liked very much. I'm still just as busy as always, but now the fact
that I hardly ever get to make it to the sessions I want to see is worse,
because I'm not getting a personalized briefing on the technology. Must
work harder.
I'm also blogging Lotusphere 2006 in
two places this year, thanks to our LotusUserGroup.org
Live From Lotusphere blog.
It's hard to blog in two places - you don't feel completely natural in
either one. But, I think that we're introducing a lot of people to the
site, to blogging, and to a part of the community they're not familiar
with by doing it, so it's all good.
Off to a busy day of podcasting,
blogging, homework, sessions, meeting and greeting, and our
blogging panel.
By the way, I've met a lot of you who've
complimented me on my blog or mentioned that you read (or lurk) -- thank
you. Not only for being here and reading, but also for telling me -- I'm
so glad to meet you in person!

So, I haven't mentioned it lately, but,
oh, yeah, it's Lotusphere season, isn't it?! Well, heck. And here I thought
I was going to have a nice quiet January at home. Or not.
Perhaps starting two grad school classes
within two weeks of leaving for the biggest show of the year wasn't the
actual brightest thing I might've done, but... hey, sometimes you just
have to kick it out there and see what happens. Here's what's happening
with me at the show...
Presentations: Three of them -- sort of:
CS104 Reach Out and Blog! (web
link)
Speaker: Many
SW 10 - Tuesday 3:00pm - 4:00pm
BOF512 IBM Lotus User Group
Leadership: Meet, Greet and Collaborate (web
link)
Speakers: Libby Ingrassia, Debbie Lynd
DL Europe 8 - Wednesday 07:00am - 8:00am
ID120 How to "Sell"
IBM Lotus Notes and Domino Inside Your Organization (web
link)
Speakers: Ed Brill, Libby Ingrassia
DL S. Hemisphere III - Wednesday 1:30pm - 2:30pm
There is actual slideware for one of
them, but the others are a panel and a BOF, so different, although the
panel at least has required a bit of prep. You might look for something
cool there...
LotusUserGroup.org: Well, there's
the BOF, as mentioned above. There's the booth (#302), where you'll be
able to find me a bit, and then there's the
Live From Lotusphere stuff (including
some very fun podcast interviews with all kinds of cool people -- listen
to our rehearsal with Debbie Lynd to whet your appetite for giggly goodness).
Just to make it fun, we've launched a brand-spanking-new
group blog -- anyone who's a LotusUserGroup.org
member and wants to contribute to the blog should come by the booth, blog,
and be signed up to win cool stuff.
Blogging: Well, now you know
of at least two places to find me blogging during the week -- here
(oh, and sometimes
here) and at the LotusUserGroup.org
Live From Lotusphere blog. Plus,
if you blog, you can grab our cool
new icon (look right -- it's red
-- see it?) and pop it up on your own blog!
I'm leaving tomorrow, arriving in the
land of the mouse around 5 pm, so hope to see many of you during the week.

some Apple-Cherry Pie to share with my boyfriend and his family, where
I spent the holiday. And at the end of this week.... I get to go visit
my Mommy! Crossing my fingers that I'm not sick when I get ready to fly!
In
other news... Don't forget that the early-bird discount for Lotusphere
2006 ends on Friday. You may want to register if you haven't done so. If
I haven't mentioned it already, I am speaking at Lotusphere. Ed

Made my hotel and etc today, so I just need to get some flights sorted

I'm actually sitting in the blogger BoF
at Lotusphere and we're talking about a variety of great blogging topics.
The room is full of people blog, who want to blog, and who read blogs.
The community feeling in the room is fabulous -- there may be a few too
many in-jokes for the folks new to the group, but for the most part, there
are good questions and commentary and tidbits and advice:
- what's the relationship between blogging
and traditional media
- what has blogging done for you and your
career
- when do you blog and when do you let
it lie fallow
- how do you post your code
- who's reading and why
- what's up with the lack of commenting?
how do we follow-up on the comments we've made at various sites?
- RSS, trackbacks, threading
- bookmarklets -- urls not for a page,
but for a piece of javascript that do something
- how can we use blogs, wikis, etc in
our company to develop community
- there are still a lot of non-bloggers,
folks who don't know what blogs are about -- how do we reach out to those
people?
- isn't it interesting how you can create
real impact, both in the Lotus community and outside of it -- don't forget
how powerful a medium the blog can be
- what about topics that could be....
off topic or antagonistic or... the internet has a very long memory --
be aware of what you're saying, what impact it can have on other people,
and what impact it can have on your career... think about how much you
want to put your opinions out there
Great
session -- I know we'll see a ton of pictures from all the folks taking
them during the site --

Well, it's Tuesday afternoon and I'm in
a small (very small) break between meetings, briefings, and sessions.....
You've heard about the Opening General Session from various bloggers, including
on the Lotus Informer, so I won't
rehash it here, but I will say that it was probably one of the best opening
sessions I've seen in a lot of ways -- a great mix of speakers, some good
tidbits... But other than the oohs and aahs that Ray Ozzie got and the
giggles and applause for John Cleese... there weren't any other big *WOW*
moments.
The rest of my Monday included a press
conference, some briefings on the developer tools news (Workplace Designer,
Domino Designer 7, APIs with 2.5 of Workplace), Notes/Domino news, and
some others. I also spoke to a few vendors, stopped by to visit at the
Press reception, had a meeting about the LotusUserGroup.org
site/organization (yes, the Domino Diva pins they're giving away have found
their way onto my badge), and finally, had a late dinner with the GSX
folks and the MKNetWork
folks. I did stop by to visit
with Kathleen and Pooter and Glen and the the Bob at Kimono's on my way
back to the room, but I didn't stay too long.
Today has been a whirlwind of appointments
-- look for more commentary on the 20 years of collaboration panel at the
Informer blog (not this instant, but a bit later on), as well as some stories
coming from today's briefings on IBM Workplace and some tidbits from the
Research lab.
I sat down with our friends at Trilog
to talk about their new project managment workplace and then with the folks
at iEnterprises
to discuss CRM on the Go, their
newest product release. Both products are innovative uses of the technology
and deserve a quick glance.
I've been so busy with press stuff that
I've not yet had the chance to hit any sessions, but I have high hopes
for this afternoon!

Well, it's late and I'm off to sleep, but
thought I'd jot a quick update. I flew into Orlando today -- and even though
I'm coming from the warm (fairly warm anyway) south, the weather in the
rest of the country caused us to change aircraft today and so we were a
bit delayed. On arrival at MCO, a good friend of my Mom's met me at the
airport and drove me to the hotel -- so very generous.
I just had time to check in, rinse off,
and get moving to go to the Penumbra dinner. Thanks as usual to that organization
for a very nice dinner -- it was good to see everyone. A lovely event occurred
during the dinner -- my good friends Liz and Rob got engaged -- congratulations
to them both. They're both sweet, sweet people and deserve much joy. Two
years ago, Barbara and her husband Peter got engaged the night before Lotusphere,
Gayle and Bruce just got engaged... it might be something in the water!
I made a brief appearance at ESPN to
visit with some of the gang, and then walked back with Alan and Michael
to the Dolphin. No pictures from tonight's activities as the camera was
in the room charging -- apparently I've not been charging it often enough
as it was all the way down. I promise I'll try to do better!

Friday: Flying home early
When I'm not doing all of this, I'll be in press meetings, additional vendor
meetings, hanging out at the
e-Pro booth (303), sneaking
in a run here and there (anyone want to run with me?!), and trying to get
next week's newsletters out! Stop by and visit...
Don't forget to pick up your copy of the one and only Lotus Informer's
Unofficial Guide to Lotusphere, available at the e-Pro publications
booth!
By the way..... Some of you were kind enough to notice that I wasn't
nearly as perky as usual at last year's Lotusphere, but hopefully I'm back
to my regular self finally. If you were one of the very, very nice people
who wrote some Lotus
haiku at Rocky's site, and
you're going to be at Lotusphere, come meet me at the Gonzo party on Saturday
night and I'll buy you a drink as appreciation.

I'm in the process of doing some early
prep for Lotusphere,
working on my presentation,
making hotel reservations, that sort of thing. I am also in the process
of creating something new that e-Pro is presenting at this Lotusphere.
As I work on that, let me ask you a
couple of questions...
- What are the most memorable
show tchotchkes for you? I know we've discussed this in the past at Turtle's
site, but what do you still have
hanging around? Why do you keep it? What did you have to do to get it?
- What are your most memorable
moments from the show, either from parties, or just during the week itself?
- If you had one piece of advice
to give to a person attending Lotusphere, what would it be?

Sorry this has taken a bit longer than I expected
it to, but here, as promised, are the slides from my Lotusphere presentations.
You can download the slides directly from Lotusphere
Online, if you attended (and
if you still have your login info), however, since I'm such a nice person,
I'm also making them available here.
If you gave me your card, I'll be mailing the slides to you, as well...
A
DominoPro's Key to Portal and Domino
Administration for Developers are
both available, thanks to the sheer uber-geekiness of my
husband (thanks, hubby).
Yes, they are PDFs, although they were
created in PPT. I prefer to share them in this format so that they stay
as created. Please feel free to look at them and share them, but if you
want to use something from the slides, please give credit. Oh, and since
they're PDFs, they're kinda big. You've been warned.

But since Brian
was nice enough to take all the
pics
from Lotusphere off my camera
and post them (thanks honey!), I thought I'd go ahead and make them visible
to you -- they're not great, and they're in no particular order, but there
they are. You can comment on them, if you feel something needs saying.
You can also feel free to share them.
Yes, I'm very backed up on blog entries -- I've had a bit of writers' block,
been exhausted, and actually hosted a Housewarming Party 24 hours after
returning from Lotusphere. I'm crazy, to say the least. ;-)
By the way, two other things:
- Plenty of other pictures and fun goodness
over at Brightrock.com, Brian's blog/gallery
- More pictures in a shared kind of environment,
over at Volker's blog/gallery

Howdy folks! And welcome to the show.... You
may have guessed the long silence was all about getting ready for Lotusphere,
in addition to recovering from the half marathon, moving, travel, etc...
Well, it's almost 1 a.m. and the first 'Sphere events are over... I
just came back from the Penumbra
dinner and the Gonzo
gathering at the ESPN Zone. First,
let me say congratulations to Barbara Bowen for winning the Penumbra Prism
award this year for all her hard work with the IBM
Lotus certification program and
her support of the community. Barb and I have been friends for many years
and I'm so happy to see her win such a richly deserved award.
The Penumbra dinner other than Barb's award was quite nice -- congrats
also to Kim Greene, the newest member of the Penumbra board of directors.
I got my "Alias" fix from Alan on the way over to the Gonzo gathering
-- don't you hate it when your TiVo isn't hooked up yet because you just
moved? Not that my husband
didn't have other, much higher,
priorities, but gosh! ;-)
Gonzo gathering was still going quite strong when Barb and I headed back
to the Swan and Dolphin. The Bob was there, the Turtle,
of course, Volker,
Ed,
Julian,
Bruce,
Wild Bill,
Pants,
and entourage (although less entourage than last year), some of my friends
from the San Diego user's group, and many others.
Volker's got a Lotusphere
Wiki going to let everyone talk
about what's going on and where they are.
Time to do a bit more work on the slides and get ready for the long week!

Boy is LS04
ever coming up fast! I just realized that we only have a few weeks left
before the show -- eek! Guess maybe I'd better buy some plane tickets and
reserve a hotel room, hunh? Sessions are now posted. I'm doing two
sessions
and a BOF.
Hope to see you there!
Putting on my work
hat for a moment: would anyone
be interested in a reader lunch, where I buy the lunch and you tell me
what you like, don't like, want to read about, etc.?

All kinds of important Lotus-related things
happened this week and I've been so heads down with real work and etc that
I haven't blogged them. Of course, many of the rest of you took care of
all of that for me, but since over half my googles for this week were for
Lotusphere 2004, I thought I'd spend just a moment talking about it.
LS2004
registration is open. You can
register, get hotels, put in an abstract for presenting, and nominate your
favorite business partner for a Lotus award (formerly a Beacon award).
You can also check out the unoffical Lotusphere page at the Turtle's
site -- yes, he's back, and I
know we're all grateful for the surely soon-to-ensue hilarity that the
Gonzo site always provides. As for registration -- pay attention -- you
now have some discount options -- register by December 2 for $1395 and
by Jan 23 for $1695. If you're a CLP, if you will wait
until October 7th, you can
get a $200 discount. Go to the Certification
Zone (requires registration --
you must be an IBM Certified Professional for Lotus Software) for details.
I think this year's Lotusphere will be an important one -- okay, I probably
say that every year -- I've been going since 1998 or 1999 and I love the
heck out of it -- but my point is that there are a lot of changes and growth
in the Lotus industry this year and we all need to hear from the horse's
mouth what their plans are so we know what our plans should be. While you
can stay home and get the information from me, you'll get more out of it
if you can make the trip yourself. Plus, one of the arguments I've heard
in the past against going is that it wasn't technical enough --
from what I've heard and seen in the descriptions of the tracks, you won't
be able to say that this year. The Best Practices track looks like it will
be expanded and you'll also be seeing some hands-on sessions at the show
-- how could you miss it?

Some interesting blog fodder in my travels
through the Web today:
- And so it begins -- the first hint of what
will be for Lotusphere
2004 is posted on Lotus.com today,
although the www.lotus.com/lotusphere
site still shows LS2003 information. And while the Turtle
seems to have come back to life,
the Gonzo
Lotusphere site, also, is still set
at 2003. How are you feeling about Lotusphere? The last two years, it has
been much smaller than it had been for a few years before that, with much
discussion over the relative merits of whether it's technical enough (versus
a devcon, I guess) and worth the money. Will you have trouble convincing
your bosses to let you go? It may seem early, but I suspect this is a good
time to start getting the feelers out there. I think in the current environment,
it's more important than ever to be on top of what's going on with the
vendor that supports so many of our careers. While we
will of course do our best to make sure the reports get to you quickly
and accurately, we can't be everywhere at the show and we can't always
hit what's important to everyone. So, I encourage as many of you that can
to come join the fun and work at the 'Sphere.
- Even though it's been out for a while,
I hadn't looked at CRN's certification
survey results or report
-- there's some interesting
stuff there, although, as often, I'm disappointed by how little attention
they pay to Lotus or any IBM certifications.
- A few months ago, I wrote
about rules in Notes mail as part
of a push to combat the other kind of spam -- all that mail that we get
from coworkers that we don't actually need -- some of it is purely personal
(jokes, invitations, etc), some of it is work-related information, but
secondary to your immediate tasks, and some of it is related to your current,
immediate, i-need-to-take-care-of-it-now tasks. So, of course, I've been
playing with my rules to try to keep some of the current virus e-mails
out of my in-box and more coralled. I just love rules. I had 350 virus-related
e-mails in my "spam" folder this morning when I opened my mail
file and only about 120 in my actual inbox. Of course, that clearly indicates
there's more work to be done on my rules themselves, but in general, they
work wonderfully. In case you're wondering, the rules right now are just
of the simple "if it has thissubject, move it to this
folder" variety -- nice and easy.
- For those Lord
of the Rings fans among us -- there's
joy to be had in December. To run up to the Dec. 17th release date, not
only are they re-releasing the first two flicks to the theaters, but on
the day before the 17th, some theaters will be showing all three flicks
(start Fellowship at 3 pm, Two Towers at 7 pm, and the premiere of Return
of the King at 11 pm, which pushes it over into the official premiere date
of the 17th. Oh yeah. I'm so there. Ten hours of pure LOTR joy. (Thanks
to Brian for the link.)
- A reason I will not be spending
my hard-earned gas money at Exxon-Mobil
any time soon: they
score in the 5 lowest companies on
their level of support for being gay-friendly. I don't like to support
companies who are bigoted as a corporate policy. Ok, to be fair, the spokesperson
says they don't discriminate, but there must be a reason they score so
low. (Again, thanks to Brian for the link.)

Well, if this year hasn't just sped by
-- not only is it July already (I hate it when I forget to post early on
a new month!), but Rocky
is already talking about LS2004. I
encourage everyone to comment there (or here) about what you'd like to
see at LS04 -- especially in the BP track. And remember - if they don't
hear your preferences loud and clear -- no whining later! ;-) Not that
you would, of course.
As for my wishes for LS04 -- I would like
to see a bit more admin in the BP track (which I think Rocky's hearing
from many sources), and that "admin" should include QP, ST, etc.
Rob mentions "Admin for Dev" and "Dev for Admins" sessions
-- I've done an Admin for developers session in the past and it went over
VERY well -- I think these sessions would be well suited for a show like
LS.
Other than that, not too much to report
this morning -- I'm way underwater in terms of stuff I *have* to get done
this week -- article reviews, webcast stuff, book stuff... Just a ton of
stuff, basically.
An interesting link or two:

An interesting
NYTimes article about an executive at Jupitermedia who's blogging
Dave
Winer's ScriptingNews has been busy
the past week or so -- he's
been getting flamed, he's been standing
up for and trying to explain RSS
and Echo... and he had this snide
remark that made me chuckle:
An old software industry joke. At Microsoft, a new
version of Windows isn't ready to ship until it doesn't run Lotus.
Read that carefully. And at Microsoft in the early nineties they used to
wear T-shirts saying Delete
Philippe. That was before they cut off
Netscape's air supply. Of course all this michegas
is totally against the interests of users because it decreases their choice,
and therefore their power.

Mike
Lazar, who's guest blogging at
Bruce's blog this week, made a comment
about Lotusphere and how "marketing-y"
the sessions are there. Ed,
of course, had to respond.
Having spoken at both the View's Admin shows (yes, I'll be there next week
with Mike and Chris and Rob and ...) and Lotusphere, I think they're both
right. (Not sure if I'm being a peacemaker or a troublemaker here, but
oh well...)
Yes, Mike, there are a lot of sessions there that could be considered marketing.
I think you could also rightly call them strategy, and they seem to be
important to lots of people, most especially customers, rather than business
partners. Lotusphere is a customer event. That's not to say it isn't also
for business partners and press and other folks, but I think it is primarily
an event intended to get customers educated not only about Lotus technology,
but also about Lotus strategy. Business partners have additional avenues
that they can use to find out where Lotus is going next, such as the Business
Partner forum. Most customers do not. So, I think that the sessions so
many of us dismiss as marketing are at least in part intended to explain
to the customers and etc what the current strategy for a particular product
or set of products is.
And, yes, Ed, I'd say that there has been an improvement over the last
few years in the number of sessions that have technical presenters and
content. Most of those, it seems to me, however, are developer sessions.
Maybe that's Rocky's influence, maybe that's addressing the people everyone
believes have the most influence, I'm not sure. It's true, however, that
administrators' needs are addressed less at Lotusphere than technical strategists
and developers (note that I'm not saying we admins are completely ignored
-- we're certainly not and there are definitely some good technical sessions
for admins -- note the overflow room for the spam-prevention session this
last Lotusphere).
The other comment I'll make about Lotusphere is that while there are more
sessions in recent years given by non-IBM speakers, a large percentage
are still given by IBMers. I'm not necessarily saying this is a bad thing
-- there are many topics that I believe come best from someone with
the entire inside story. That said, however, I think there are also sessions
that folks don't see as technical (even when they may be) because they
are given by IBMers -- some IBMers don't yet have the reputation as straight-talkers
and attendees assume that all they will get will be the party line about
a particular feature or topic rather than the truth about how it really
works in the real world and what problems or workarounds might need to
be considered. So, I think this contributes to the belief that there
are only marketing sessions.
Anyway, I think the real difference is that the View's Admin show is completely
dedicated to administrators and it is almost completely objective. Regardless
of anything else that means, it gives the impression of having more of
what an administrator needs, technically.
Well, that's my rather long-winded $.02.
