I'm actually sitting in the blogger BoF
at Lotusphere and we're talking about a variety of great blogging topics.
The room is full of people blog, who want to blog, and who read blogs.
The community feeling in the room is fabulous -- there may be a few too
many in-jokes for the folks new to the group, but for the most part, there
are good questions and commentary and tidbits and advice:
- what's the relationship between blogging
and traditional media
- what has blogging done for you and your
career
- when do you blog and when do you let
it lie fallow
- how do you post your code
- who's reading and why
- what's up with the lack of commenting?
how do we follow-up on the comments we've made at various sites?
- RSS, trackbacks, threading
- bookmarklets -- urls not for a page,
but for a piece of javascript that do something
- how can we use blogs, wikis, etc in
our company to develop community
- there are still a lot of non-bloggers,
folks who don't know what blogs are about -- how do we reach out to those
people?
- isn't it interesting how you can create
real impact, both in the Lotus community and outside of it -- don't forget
how powerful a medium the blog can be
- what about topics that could be....
off topic or antagonistic or... the internet has a very long memory --
be aware of what you're saying, what impact it can have on other people,
and what impact it can have on your career... think about how much you
want to put your opinions out there
Great
session -- I know we'll see a ton of pictures from all the folks taking
them during the site --

Well, it's Tuesday afternoon and I'm in
a small (very small) break between meetings, briefings, and sessions.....
You've heard about the Opening General Session from various bloggers, including
on the Lotus Informer, so I won't
rehash it here, but I will say that it was probably one of the best opening
sessions I've seen in a lot of ways -- a great mix of speakers, some good
tidbits... But other than the oohs and aahs that Ray Ozzie got and the
giggles and applause for John Cleese... there weren't any other big *WOW*
moments.
The rest of my Monday included a press
conference, some briefings on the developer tools news (Workplace Designer,
Domino Designer 7, APIs with 2.5 of Workplace), Notes/Domino news, and
some others. I also spoke to a few vendors, stopped by to visit at the
Press reception, had a meeting about the LotusUserGroup.org
site/organization (yes, the Domino Diva pins they're giving away have found
their way onto my badge), and finally, had a late dinner with the GSX
folks and the MKNetWork
folks. I did stop by to visit
with Kathleen and Pooter and Glen and the the Bob at Kimono's on my way
back to the room, but I didn't stay too long.
Today has been a whirlwind of appointments
-- look for more commentary on the 20 years of collaboration panel at the
Informer blog (not this instant, but a bit later on), as well as some stories
coming from today's briefings on IBM Workplace and some tidbits from the
Research lab.
I sat down with our friends at Trilog
to talk about their new project managment workplace and then with the folks
at iEnterprises
to discuss CRM on the Go, their
newest product release. Both products are innovative uses of the technology
and deserve a quick glance.
I've been so busy with press stuff that
I've not yet had the chance to hit any sessions, but I have high hopes
for this afternoon!

Well, it's late and I'm off to sleep, but
thought I'd jot a quick update. I flew into Orlando today -- and even though
I'm coming from the warm (fairly warm anyway) south, the weather in the
rest of the country caused us to change aircraft today and so we were a
bit delayed. On arrival at MCO, a good friend of my Mom's met me at the
airport and drove me to the hotel -- so very generous.
I just had time to check in, rinse off,
and get moving to go to the Penumbra dinner. Thanks as usual to that organization
for a very nice dinner -- it was good to see everyone. A lovely event occurred
during the dinner -- my good friends Liz and Rob got engaged -- congratulations
to them both. They're both sweet, sweet people and deserve much joy. Two
years ago, Barbara and her husband Peter got engaged the night before Lotusphere,
Gayle and Bruce just got engaged... it might be something in the water!
I made a brief appearance at ESPN to
visit with some of the gang, and then walked back with Alan and Michael
to the Dolphin. No pictures from tonight's activities as the camera was
in the room charging -- apparently I've not been charging it often enough
as it was all the way down. I promise I'll try to do better!

As I get ready for Lotusphere, here's a
quick overview (Subject to change, of course!) of where I'll be during
the show. I also started a new Flickr
account for my photos from
the show, so I'll try to keep up with the uploading duties! While I'll
be doing some blogging here during the show, most of what I blog will likely
be at the Lotus
Informer blog, so keep an eye there throughout the week.
Saturday: Arrive around 4:45 at MCO, Penumbra dinner, Gonzo gathering
at ESPN
Sunday: Morning appointments, 2 pm - 4 pm - Judging Lotus Best in Showcase
award, Welcome reception
Monday: Opening General Session, product showcase reception and press
dinner (invite only)
Tuesday: Innovators Panel, Appointments with vendors; Certification
BOF; Lotus User Group BOF; Dinner with e-Pro team
Wednesday: 8:30-9:30 - Speaking: STR106 How to "Sell"
Notes/Domino Internally, with Ed Brill; Workplace Rich Client session;
Blogging BOF; Appointments with vendors, Lotusphere party
Thursday: Gurupalooza, Ask the Developers, Closing General Session
Friday: Flying home early
When I'm not doing all of this, I'll be in press meetings, additional vendor
meetings, hanging out at the
e-Pro booth (303), sneaking
in a run here and there (anyone want to run with me?!), and trying to get
next week's newsletters out! Stop by and visit...
Don't forget to pick up your copy of the one and only Lotus Informer's
Unofficial Guide to Lotusphere, available at the e-Pro publications
booth!
By the way..... Some of you were kind enough to notice that I wasn't
nearly as perky as usual at last year's Lotusphere, but hopefully I'm back
to my regular self finally. If you were one of the very, very nice people
who wrote some Lotus
haiku at Rocky's site, and
you're going to be at Lotusphere, come meet me at the Gonzo party on Saturday
night and I'll buy you a drink as appreciation.

Ed posted a good
comment-generating bit here that
should allow any of you who have a Notes Sucks! comment to share to share
away.
Seriously, though, when our team migrated
from Exchange/Outlook to Domino/Notes, I was the "unofficial"
support for some of our team, and all the Notes sucks comments you might
want were quite apparent. Some of our users have gotten used to it, but
a few still tell me how much Notes sucks every time we talk...
Since the session Ed refers to is one
we'll be presenting together, if there's anyone who sees this who hasn't
already seen that, we'd love all the comments you have!

I love TiVo, and I know there are a lot
of other folks out there loving it too. I jsut found out there's a new
TiVo feature available to any of you with a Series 2 TiVo: TiVo
To Go. Now you can take your TiVo
recordings with you on your computer -- this will be particularly cool
for those of us who travel a lot and don't actually get to sit and watch
our TiVos very often. My TiVo doesn't yet have the service update that's
necessary, but I'm still hopeful this will be an awesome feature.

Well, with the surgery and how sick I've
been all winter, I've had to make the decision not to run in the marathon
in January. Some of you may already have expected this, but I'm pretty
disappointed, myself. I've just gotten yet another cold, and it's pretty
clear that I'm not over the weakness and lethargy that seems to be part
of the recovery from the surgery, so I'm taking it a bit easy.
Even if I can't run or row, I'm going back to the dance studio on Wednesday
and I may be starting back into Nia
and yoga. I'll definitely
be doing some stretching at home. If you're not doing any stretching,
this article has some good tips and stretches.

Location: Pennsylvania |
Well, welcome to 2005. I've been up in
Pennsylvania visiting some friends for the New Year, which has been pretty
nice. Would've been even better if I'd had more actual time to take as
vacation, but some things don't let up. I'm working on a special publication
for us to present at Lotusphere -- I
hinted at it a few weeks ago
and we're going to print this week. If you're going to Lotusphere (who's
going to be there, by the way?), please stop by our booth at the show and
look for The Lotus Informer's Unofficial Guide to Lotusphere. Not
having one of these is like Ford Prefect not having his Hitchiker's Guide
and towel.
Did anyone make resolutions this year? I thought a lot about what resolutions
I might make and decided that a any one resolution wasn't what I wanted
this year, but merely some commitments to myself. On the other hand, I
have tried to promise myself to do a bit more writing and work here, including
possibly some more "professional" writing. We'll see what happens.
