If you thought I was excited about the
new Star Wars movie and the possibilities that the live action series holds,
well, you're right. If you think I'm even more excited about the Serenity
movie by Joss Whedon (based on the Firefly series), you might be even more
right. Trailer
released (via Slashdot)
and ohmigod does it look COOL!

The cool thing about all those various
subscriptions I read is that sometimes extra cool news comes across:
From
the BBC: After this final installment
of the Star Wars movie franchise, you can look for a live-action TV show
in addition to the animated Clone Wars series continuing as 30-minute shows,
rather than the 3-minute shorts they've been to this point.
Yay!

Yes, I've been way, way too lax on my running.
Stipulated. So, I'm getting my act in gear and starting again. Seems like
you ought to have time for that sort of thing when you're without a full-time
job, no?
Walked on Saturday while in Austin,
and ran on Sunday -- we did a 4+ mile loop around Town Lake both days.
It's so lovely there.
Walked on Monday here -- the 2 mile
walk to Rice, the just-under 3 mile loop around Rice, and then the walk
back -- always nice.
Skipped Tuesday.
Tonight: dance class

While I'm waiting for the stroke of genius
to strike and tell me exactly what will make me most fulfilled going forward,
I'm doing a few other things. :-) I took a few days off last week to enjoy
some time with my best friend, who had her baby on the 7th, and then another
close friend who had her baby on Sunday. I went out of town for a long
weekend away with Philip, just to clear my head and get away from the bleakness
that I've been struggling a bit to overcome.
In the meanwhile, I've agreed to do
some contract writing for one company (I'm working feverishly on some book
chapters, in fact) and some other contract work for some other folks --
and of course I'm working on slides to present at the Admin show in May.
I'm applying for a few jobs and for graduate school, so I'm keeping busy.
So, I'm not gone completely, I'm just
still in the process of figuring it all out. I had what was possibly the
perfect job for me in many ways and I don't want to settle for less! :-)

I was deep in my own murk and business
last week when Saul Bellow passed away on April 5th. His books represented
my first effort at teaching at the college level. When I was in high school,
I was in a program in my school district that allowed students to intern
with professionals. I was a member of The Mentor Program, as it was called,
for 4 semesters, during which time I had 5 different mentors. I spent time
with a Justice of the Peace, Assistant District Attorney, Federal District
Judge, local Newspaper Editor, and community college English Professor.
While I was working with the English professor -- mostly helping him grade
papers, attending his classes, spending office hours with him, he also
gave me an assignment to prepare a lesson on one of the authors his class
would be studying during the semester. I selected Saul Bellow. It's been
many years (oh my goodness, was that really fall of 1988?) and I'm not
even sure I remember the specific work we were studying (although I'm almost
certain it was Seize the Day, it might also have been Herzog), but I remember
the feeling I had preparing to teach and standing up in front of the classroom
--- I got to open up an amazing work of art for other people and get them
to think about what it might mean. Describing an anti-hero to people who
were much more likely to be interested in more traditional heroes... and
seeing the understanding in their papers later...
It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Well, if you've been to e-ProMag.com today,
you've probably seen the notice that the publication is closing its doors.
We just weren't making enough money to keep it going profitably. As part
of closing the publication, I got laid off. What was even worse was having
to tell all my wonderful writers and tech editors and contributors that
we were done -- they've all been so amazing over the past couple of years.
So. There you have it.
It's definitely the end to a major chapter
of my life. I've been working on e-Pro and its predecessors (Group Computing
and DominoPro) since 1999, and doing it as my full-time job since 2000.
That's a big chunk of my professional career. I worked with some great
people and had some amazing opportunities, all of which I'm very grateful
for.
Now it's time to figure out what's next.
I've had a few offers of employment or contract work, but I'm not really
sure what's what, beyond that. I guess in some ways this is that opportunity
to get some yoga and running in, write some things that aren't about technology,
and go back to graduate school.
