Bloggers
vs. Journalists... One of my
favorite topics and Amy Wohl has a new couple of points to make about it
today.
I like Amy's idea in this entry about how to categorize a blog...
Maybe blogs should have a little code or information block up front that
tells readers what kind of blog they are. Some suggestions:
Opinions - This is a personal blog, written by its owner, and will be interesting
mainly to his friends and those who share his point of view and/or interests.
Public Interest - This is a blog about a subject of interest to the world-at-large
(or some major part of it). It may be written from a particular point
of view (which should be clearly noted), but it is of interest to a broad
audience.
Journalist Adjunct to a Publication - This is a blog that belongs to a
publication (like a newspaper). It is written according to the policies
of the newspaper as a convenient way to provide additional coverage on
a particular event or subject.
Journalist's Personal Blog - This is a blog that belongs to a journalist
who writes for a publication but who uses his blog to express his views
on other subjects in this place. In that case, we will assume the
newspaper (or other publication) doesn't edit or control the content of
his blog unless he says otherwise.
Technical - Blogs about particular subjects, from computing to open heart
surgery, generally of interest only to fellow practitioners.
Personal - Blogs used to share personal thoughts with friends or relatives.
Often private rather than public. Of interest onlly to the members
of the group.
Social - Blogs used to communicate among the members of a group such as
a club, team, study group, or other project. May be private. Of
interest only to the members of the group.
But. I think at least three or four of those would apply to me and this
current blog... Journalist's personal blog, techincal, personal, maybe
opinions... Does that mean that I should really separate my blogging
out into separate blogs to be more of interest to separate audiences?
Hm.
Your thoughts, oh, bloggers amongst us?

Awww, gosh, Rocky, how sweet. Clearly, I have
some awesome friends, not only in the Lotus community, but everywhere,
and Rocky's post today is just one cool outpouring of said friendship.
For those who haven't yet been to Rocky's
blog today, he posted a call for the First Annual Libby Ingrassia Lotus
Haiku Contest. I've promised the winner a drink at Lotusphere or somewhere
else we can manage to get together. When I peeked just now, there were
19
comments -- I'm so impressed with
the haiku and all my awesome friends!
If you're curious how the whole Libby and
Domino haiku thing got started... When I wrote my first book, my friend
and editor, Scott, told me I was being a bit... umm, I think the polite
word was "uptight" with my bio. So there was some Guiness involved
and the bio got rewritten in a much perkier style. With the Domino haiku
promise in there. And it stuck.
Got any more haiku in you? Here's one to
get you started...
Dominos: many
dots; like servers, or leaves on
trees, or like you: friends

Thanks, y'all! Having all these well-wishes
on the blog and the many in e-mail helped make for a nice day -- thank
you! A group of my friends met me last night for cosmos and fondue, which
was also very nice. And to top it off, I get the keys to my new apartment
today: I'm really looking forward to it!
Let the agonies and joys of moving begin

It is tough to top last week's flash-blog
birthday greetings, but a blog-jacking comes pretty close. It's a busy
day/week in Libby's world, but I'm sure she will stop to smell the roses.
Please join in wishing Libby the best on this day, and every day. Happy
birthday, Libby!
Might as well make two of us hijaking the
blog!!! Happy Birthday!

You'd think with all the discussion going
on lately of ethical and unethical behaviour, not only by analyst
firms,
but also by various companies,
that the companies in our corner of the industry would have a clue that
we're not really going to stand for things with which we disagree.
Here's mine for today. I guess some folks would probably say that this
isn't completely beyond the pale: hey, compete in any way possible.
I disagree.
Company A: SoftQuest
Company B: The
Wolcott Group
They're competitors. Great. Fine. Competition is good!
Company
A has registered a typo of company B's URL (Wolcot with one "T")
and redirected it to their Website. If you weren't sure about who you were
going to see, it's definitely possible you might think that one company
had bought the other, changed names, etc...
I don't like it.

Finally.
There've been articles all over the place
over the years of what Notes/Domino does and doesn't do, and should, especially
as compared to Outlook.
Now, there's an article that lists a Dozen
Things Outlook Doesn't Do -- But Should.
Did you notice that a few of those things
are things that Notes already does?

Well, I'm feeling somewhat better, although
still coughing a fair amount. I'm very tired of being sick, I can say that
-- it's been almost 2 1/2 weeks now! Urg. Thanks for the well-wishes from
many of you.
Moving. Ah the joys. Boxes, paint, utilities...
figuring out what furniture will fit where, what goes into storage or gets
sold... all the fun stuff. I'm hoping to do a major clean-out and then
have a garage sale.
More updates coming soon, hopefully. Thanks
for sticking with me during this, um, dry spell.
